Know Your Fitness Equipment:

Smith Machine is a piece of Gym Equipment used in gym. It contains barbell that is fixed within hardened rod with the help of linear bearings which allow smooth and friction free vertical movement. A smith machine includes a weight rack to store Weight Plates and to help stabilise it. Some Smith Machine have the counter balanced barbell. The smith machine can be used for a multiple exercises such as squat, shoulder press, chest press, shrugs, dead lifts etc.

The smith machine was invented by an American Jack LaLanne in his gym in the 1950s. The improved model of smith machine installed at Vic Tanny’s gym in Los Angeles at that time. By the end of the 1950s the smith machine was being manufactured and sold more widely.

A smith machine is considered safer to use than an ordinary barbell because it cannot fall sideways, forwards or backwards. Since the weight does not need to be stabilized, this can allow exercisers to lift more weight.
